FALENA is a portable audio interception system consisting of a processor and a digital audio recorder. The device specifically allows the user to capture and record human speech in quiet or noisy environments. It can reach a maximum distance of approximately 150-300 meters (490 ~ 984 feet) when connected to one of the available high-performance array microphones.
The system was designed to aid law enforcement investigations or for any security purpose involving a perimeter that needs survey. The system can support up to 2 microphones, each input is quick and precise monitor of equipped with various DSP capabilities including:
- Automatic Level Control (ALC)
- Auto Gate (programmable Noise Gate)
- Band pass filter
- Low Pass filter
- High Pass filter
- Notch filter
Up to five filters of any type can be chained simultaneously. The FALENA comes with a range of predefined filter settings, including some optimized for the worst ambient audio conditions:
- Power lines strong electromagnetic fields
- Rumble and traffic noise
- Wideband strong noises in urban area
Additionally, when using the FALENA, the angle relative to the target can be reduced allowing for strong attenuation of unwanted noise, and the sensitivity of the system increases. A special digital array microphone is available with electronic internal beam forming capability. A bright and sun-readable 4.3 "color LCD screen with capacitive touchscreen allows the operator to constantly set and monitor all relevant parameters of the audio system.
A USB-hosted SIM card stores all recorded audio files. The maximum recording time allowed for each SIM inserted is approximately 45 hours (1 channel, uncompressed audio). The system can be controlled locally and remotely*. In local mode the GUI (Graphical User Interface) is based on the RGB color LCD Multi-Touch display.
Network control will be provided via embedded web server to any browser compatible device. A self-test utility will allow a fast and precise monitoring of the working conditions of the entire system even remotely.
The system is available in two different versions: with or without wiring and software required to implement the electronic beam control capability found on the flagship product of digital array microphones.
There are many array microphones that can be used with FALENA. Below we see two:
Example 1 - Array with 48 analog microphones ( Photo A ). Each microphone on the array is added directly to the others. The result is a great directionality and an improvement of the signal to the noise, and consequently of the dynamic range which, added to the gain capacity of the FALENA, allows a high audio quality and intelligibility even at great distances.
Example 2 – Array totally composed of digital microphones, available in various configurations, in the photo an example with 4 panels of 20 microphones each, with a total size of 40x32cm ( Photo B ). Each individual microphone sends its signal to a low power FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) which applies to each microphone a different DSP strategy necessary to build the required electronic action beam.
The biggest benefits over the analog array consists in the fact that it is no longer necessary to orient the panel manually or with pan and tilt positioner in the direction of the desired audio, everything is managed via DSP software from FALENA, also allowing fully remote operation without a local operator. This total digital solution is also completely immune to the length of the cable and the proximity of strong electromagnetic sources which cannot induce audible noise on the cable because it does not carry low levels of analog signals.
